29 miners.

As you would know this is the West Coast's darkest hour. 29 families are suffering from the death of their beloved ones that were stuck down in the Pike River Mine. Unfortunately as a result of the second explosion everybody lost hope in the miners still being alive and all of the families and friends once they found out crashed out and were torn apart. To help these families, Oaklands School is holding a mufti day on Friday 3rd December, then we are kindly going to send the money that we funraised to the families.

Shot Put Videos

In Room 4 we have been doing our shot put videos to show our technique. When you set up the ball it has to be under your jaw bone then you push as hard as you can and then release.
We are uploading them onto our Ultranet page.
We had to write a title and write a description about what we are doing well and we had to write our next step.
They are looking very cool.

Kapa Haka

On Friday the 19th November Oaklands School is hosting a Twilight Gala and the Kapa Haka group is performing. Kapa Haka have been performing at the Gala for two years, this year will be the third year. Kapa Haka has actually performed every year since the Gala started in 2008.
Kapa Haka has performed for school and the Cultural Festival so they have experienced the fear of going on stage.
This year will be really amazing as this year the Gala is fundraising for the school pool.
Kapa Haka takes hard work and dedication as it is on every Friday at 12:15 sometimes it’s on a Thursday as we have had heaps of holidays.
Kapa Haka is a chance to experience dancing and singing for Yr 3-8 students, which is 8 yrs to 13 yrs of age. Kapa Haka is just one of the activities you can achieve when you're in primary, because when you go into High school you won’t have much time to practise, as for primary and intermediate you can practise as long as you want unless you have homework!

Gok Your Frock!!!!

Gok Your Frock.

This week for the school Gala there is a new competition called “Gok Your Frock”. For this challenge all you need to do is buy a hideous frock from the Gok Your Frock shop in our school hall for $5.00. Paying $5.00 signs you into the competition. When you have the frock you must turn its hideous form into the most fashionable dress you can imagine, but you must leave at least three quarters of the original frock or you will be disqualified .
In this competition you can either be in a team or by yourself.
When the night comes the people who are in the competition will choose a person to model their new and improved dress. There will be judges to see who should win first prize and they will walk away with a very valuable prize and start living it up on Saturday.

Debating

This week in Room 4 we have been studying debates and how they convince people to believe in a point of view.
First of all we practised doing debates for and against school uniforms in New Zealand schools.
Then we were given set tasks either for or against Facebook R13, Cell phones R11 and Single sex classes.
We are still waiting for the information that will tell us who will be going through to debate with the other classes in the Shooting Stars team.
Some people found rebutting easy and others found it hard, rebutting is putting people down in a nice way, trying to make their argument look weak.
We all learnt we had to be strong or no one would believe us.

Friendship Chair

In Room 4 we have been making two friendship-chairs. We now have our friendship-chairs finished and lots of people are using them. Our plants are still alive thanks to the Room 4 students who have been watering them. Our friendship-chairs have now been out for 6 weeks and they still look as good as new. Most people are using it for rests and for eating lunch.

Hopefully our friendship-chairs will get used at our twilight gala and for years to come.

Room 4 in Mosaics

Now......how good is your maths knowledge??

It is our goal that we can all explain these maths terms in our own words. How many can you explain??

Mrs Patten learns about GIMP

Mrs Patten has attended an ICT practicum today and has learnt how to use a photo manipulation programme called Gimp. This programme allows you to cut the background from a picture and put it into another setting. Here we have Lily-May experiencing the bouncy castle - do you know where she came from to here?

Puppetmaking

We created and made puppets in our recent ART ATTACK Days. Everyone was really creative with their designs and resulting facial expressions and clothing.

Debating.

This year Room 4 has been writing arguments. Over the next few weeks our teacher Mrs Patten or Mrs McLeod is going to put us in groups of three , each group will write an against or for argument. Once the arguments are finished they will have lots of great strong words and will be very convincing. Each"for" group will vs an "against" group and the winning group might vs Mrs Patten and Mrs McLeod. The topic we have done so far was "School uniforms should be banned". There will be a lot of debating in Room 4 this term!

Athletics Sports

Athletics has been and gone as all the students participated in high jump, shot put, long jump, discus, sprints and long distance(our choice for long distance). We were going to be doing it all the one day on the 21st October but it ended up being on the 22nd as well, because of the weather conditions. Some of the great athletic students got into the zones and would compete against other schools at Hillmorton High School. Then if they were lucky enough to get a place in the zones they would go to the Canterbury's and so on. In the end everyone did a great job and some even broke the Oakland's school records. Tyler from our class broke the long distance record by one second. Well done everyone!

Book Week

Book Week has just been. The exciting dress up to the book quiz and every thing in-between it's been great . First we had our book quiz we had simple questions and then complex questions.Everyone succeeded and accomplished the sheet in our groups. Our group the "Pencil Shavings" came second there were 24 questions. Next we had the dress up and I dressed up as Velma off Scooby- Doo. Our class winners have been Maddie, Paris and Annaliese. Maddie had dressed up as Mrs Pratchett out of Boy Going Solo with a lollie jar and a rat, don't worry the rat was not real. Paris dressed up as Pippy Long Stockings and Annaliese dressed up as The Worst Witch. Maddie came third in our team in the dress up competition.

Debating

This term our writing topic has been debating. Mrs McLeod has been teaching us all about debating and how to do it. We have learnt that you have to use strong argument language and that there are three speakers. The first speaker has to introduce their team and then say their paragraph of argument reasons. The second speaker says their argument reasons and then the third speaker has to say their reasons and then a conclusion. The topic we have been debating is "School uniforms should be banned." Once you have your team together you have to decide whether you are for the topic or against the topic. After that a team that's for the topic debates against a team that's against the topic. Next week, on the 10th of November the Shooting Stars team are going to have a debating competition. By Paris G
